Ascension Sunday 1 June 2014

Mothers and fathers would usually remind us with lines such as these: "Drink your milk and stay healthy, make sure you exercise regularly, and sleep early."  They would add: "Make friends and be good."  And then as good Christian parents they would also add: "Always pray that God may bless you."

Jesus in today's Gospel is about to leave and as a good parent would, he left us Christians, His disciples, some parting words.  Our health indeed is of paramount importance to us and to our mission.  It gives us good humor and strength to have a happy life and healthy living allows us to do more and achieve more.  Our moral and social life adds color to our every day living in harmony with our friends and neighbors.  Our spiritual life, when properly nurtured in conversation with God, makes us happier and healthier persons even in times of adversities and problems.

Good health, health relationships, happy spiritual lives: all these our parents wish for us, as do our God on high.  We would do well to work for these, sacrificing some things to obtain them for our good and for the good of all those who surround and care for us.  But Jesus the Second Person of the Holy Trinity before He ascends to heaven, leaves us with one more set of parting words which our parents on earth could not imagine to say and would not, even if it crosses their minds.  Jesus tells us: "I will be with you to the end of time and to the ends of the earth!"

We thank Our Lord Jesus Christ for such words because we know them to be true and are not just mere words.  Indeed He guides us till today, especially through the Holy Spirit.  This we hold in our minds and hearts as we strive to carry out the mission He gives us: "Go therefore; make me known to all men and make them my disciples as you are my disciples."  He does not only send us but also He gives us the grace so that we may fulfill the mission He has tasked us with.
